Luckenbooth Brooch

Sold from "locked booths" (lukenbooths) on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, lovers exchanged these brooches on betrothal in the 1700's, and pinned them on babies' shawls for generations to protect them from "evil spirits".     

Made of pewter.
